Q Who can participate in a whitewater rafting trip?
A

White Cloud Rafting Adventures offers a river trip for folks of all ages, experience and adventure level. We welcome all persons in reasonable physical condition. Swimming ability is advised but not required, as all guests are required to wear an approved personal flotation device (PFD); your PFD will safely float you until your guide can pull you back into the boat. When accompanied by a supervising adult, children as young as four can safely join in the rafting fun. Many seniors Raft the Salmon River every year, participating in the level of adventure that meets their individual needs.

The High Adventure trip is early season on fast moving, high water through class II, III and IV rapids. This is are most challenging trip best suited for the veteran rafter, and adventurous beginners. This trip is available based on seasonal water flows and restricted to children over the age of fourteen.

Another option for the adventurous at heart is the Kayak Trip, available throughout the rafting season. Maneuvering an inflatable kayak down the river allows you to experience the water on an individual level and challenges your skills. The degree of difficulty is dependent on seasonal water flows and can vary from moderate to demanding.

For many the Whitewater Rafting Trip offers the perfect combination of fun and adventure. Class II and III rapids combine with the natural beauty of the canyon to provide a thrilling river ride, and opportunity to learn about the native flora and fauna and natural history of the Salmon river and Sawtooth Wilderness area. This trip is ideal for beginners and veterans alike. Oar and paddle rafts are available for this trip. Oar rafts, where a guide does the maneuvering, are recommended for families with young children and individual who are non-swimmers. Adults, teens and older children will enjoy the “hands on” experience of working together to navigate the raft down the river.

White Cloud Rafting Adventures offers a Scenic Float Trip perfect for guests wanting a calm, scenic ride. Oar rafts our used for this trip to allow guests to kick back while your guide does the work. This trip floats a section of the river with no rapids and is ideal for non-swimmers and anyone not wanting to get wet.

Q What precautions does White Cloud Rafting Adventures take to ensure guests’ safety?

  • White Cloud Rafting Adventures requires all guides to be state licensed as float boat guides to insure your guide has the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to navigate you and your group safely down the river.
  • White Cloud Rafting Adventures requires all guides to be certified in CPR and first aid.
  • Our guides start every trip with a brief talk to explain the basics of rafting, including how to safely enter and exit the raft and what to do if you fall out of the raft. At this time guides can address any specific questions guests may have.
  • Each guest is provided a coast guard approved life jacket as well as wet suits and splash gear if needed, to insure your safety and comfort.
  • White Cloud Rafting Adventures inspects and maintains all equipment on a regular basis to insure safe operation on the river.
Q Will I fall out of the raft?
A

Most likely not. On average only one percent of our guests fall out of the raft.

Q What’s the best time of year to go rafting?
A

White Cloud Rafting Adventures offers daily departures 7 days a week between the months of June and September. If you're looking for the excitement of >High Water Adventure, you will need to book your trip for springtime – late May to early June. Water temperatures are in the 40- to 50-degree range and weather is variable during the spring run-off, so be prepared to wear a wetsuit. If t-shirts and shorts are your style, you’ll want to book your trip for July or August when temperatures go up and warm, sunny days are the norm. Rivers are running on a regular release and provide an exciting trip into August. The annual salmon spawning run ends the rafting season in late August.

Q What should I wear?
A

We recommend a bathing suit, t-shirts, and shorts with a jacket and tennis shoes or sandals that have non-slip treads and fasten securely. It’s best to wear non-cotton clothing that will dry quickly in the event you get wet. Bring a spare set of clothing to change into after rafting. Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses with straps.

Q When should I make a reservation?

Certain days during the season sell out quickly, so we encourage you to call our office at 1-800-571-RAFT or 1-208-774-7238 to check availability. While reservations are preferred in advance to ensure that we can accommodate your first scheduling choice, we are always available to take last-minute bookings and walk-ins. We want to see you on the river!

Q What is the weather like?
A

Warm summer days and cool, crystal clear nights are typical for this high mountain valley. The weather is generally warm and sunny by midday with an occasional short-lived cloudburst. During the summer, temperatures range from 60-90 degrees during the day and in the 40s-50s at night.

Q How cold is the water?
A

The temperature ranges from 40 degrees in May to 60 degrees in August. Splash gear is provided to keep you dry during the occasional spray of water.

Q How far are you from Sun Valley?
A

White Cloud Rafting Adventures headquarters in Stanley is a one-hour scenic drive from Sun Valley.

Q How deep is the river?
A

The depth of the Salmon River varies from one-foot-deep riffles to pools 20 feet deep. At the beginning of the season, during high water the depth of the river is about 10 feet, dropping to 2 to 3 feet by the end of the season in September.

Q What is the rating of the rapids on the Salmon river?
A

The rapids on the Salmon River range from Class I to Class IV. The classification varies with fluctuating water levels. Although higher water levels normally increase the difficulty of the rapids, low water levels may expose rocks and complicate navigation.

  • Class I rapids are very small rapids with low waves, slow currents.
  • Class II rapids are fairly frequent rapids of medium difficulty with few or no obstructions.
  • Class III rapids are difficult, large or irregular waves up to four feet with numerous rapids requiring some maneuvering of the raft.
  • Class IV are very difficult, long, extended rapids that require careful maneuvering of the raft. Powerful irregular waves and numerous obstructions are common. Course is hard to determine and scouting may be necessary.
